Chevelle: All is New

Third album, when it was tugged between staying true to itself and delivering radio hits: "This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In)."

So what will the alternative metal band, which is playing in Evansville on a bill between Trapt and hitmaker Nickelback, call the album it plans to release at the end of the year? Drummer Sam Loeffler isn't sure, but this tour and recording session definitely have their own vibes.

"The theme is 'Everything is new,'" said Loeffler, on a cell phone outside an arena in Bossier City, La. "It's like starting over. Things are weird."

The Chicago-based band is shifting gears unexpectedly. This is its first album without bassist Joe Loeffler, who just happens to be the brother of Sam and Pete Loeffler, the band's lead singer. Joe left last year after some tense times on the road; his brother said he wasn't happy recording or touring.

"When you're in a band, you have problems there," Sam Loeffler said. "We're working it out. I think it makes it more difficult when you're related. You can't just walk away. It's your family. You want to be around them. You're pressured to work it out faster. "He was in this band since he was 14. He started at a very early age. He didn't have a choice about what he wanted. I hope he finds what he wants to do, what makes him happy."

The remaining Loeffler brothers - plus Joe's replacement, Dean Bernadini - have found their happiness on the road. Already stars thanks to such songs as "The Red" and "Vitamin R," they're feeding off the energy of the fans, many of whom are brought in by Nickelback, which plays last on the bill, Loeffler said.

"There's not a lot of big bands, and Nickelback is one of them," Loeffler said. "They have the ability to go top 40 if they want to. We're just a little bit heavier. They can do whatever they want. They're a very talented band, all of them. I think they've got a broad range of what they want to do."

Nickelback's radio-friendly sound has led to five albums, the most recent of which is "All the Right Reasons," which was released in October and reached No. 1 on the charts. The band played the Duck Inn in Evansville before hitting it big in 2001. Trapt is a modern rock band based in California, which released its second album, "Someone in Control," last year.

Chevelle has been switching between two songs to preview live from its upcoming album, "Humanoid" and "Straight Jacket Fashion." The band has seven songs written and plans to record more later in the year.

Will the defection of their little brother affect the writing?

"I don't know if it'll affect what we'll write about," Loeffler said. "Pete writes about different experiences of everyday life. ... I'm sure Pete will have some lyrics. I don't know what they are."

Chevelle has plenty of reasons to rock on.

"There's a huge portion of people who listen to us who live vicariously through us who want to play in a band," he said. "I feel it's our duty to live it up and take advantage of it. All that matters is you play your best and you have a good time. The best thing (people in the audience) can do is sing along and bob your head."
