Читаем обзор концерта от 28 марта в WILKES BARRE. Некто расказывает о прошедшем коцерте и делится своими впечатлениями о новой песне:
Are Nickleback fans this homeboy, mom and dad, apple pie, or is this just a mellow section in Wilkes Barre?%^%$#@ I’d imagine it would have to be the former, after having been to the Ford Pavilion At Montage Mountain just down the street 5 minutes this past summer to see 3 doors, STAIND and Breaking Benjamin. Major tailgating going on even miles down the road before getting there. I’ll never forget the one 85 Chrysler X body with the flat tire trying to make it up the mountain, grinding mercilessly on the bare rim. I yelled out....hey why don’t you put switch the front tire with the back, YOU’LL GET SOME TRACTION!!! It didn’t matter, they were still moving, and actually going at a speed consistent with one jumping out every 3 minutes or so to pee on the side of the road. The entire crowd was at least a six pack of beer or joints over buzzed.
So I was looking forward to at least a couple hours of good tailgate before going in. I brought 2-30 packs of Miller, figured one for me,,,,and one free beer for any other healthy good natured Chevelle fan over 18 (and I brought magic markers and some extra 30 pack separators to advertise my intent).
When we got to our parking spot, I quick popped the trunk, had a few chugs...looked out over the lot...there was absolutely NOTHING going on! Did we get the arena mixed up?....is this the Martina McBride concert#@!?
Everyone I talked to was vacant about Chevelle. I don’t want to sound cruel...but these people didn’t even seem to be music fans. Out for an evening?....see a movie?.....maybe catch a Nickleback concert? No matter, Rob and I were still gung ho. Rob was itchin to see our seats, which I told him were down in the front. They direct us to the floor where the guy says, “welcome to the mosh pit”,,,you had to see the look on Rob’s face. Too many stories of Oz Fest, the Rolling Stones...Hells Angels dancing in his head. Obviously there was no mosh pit, not here, not tonight. Not according to the Wachovia Bank execs I suppose...circulating above in their offices for some reason at 7 o’clock at nite...wouldn't that disturb them.
The highlight of our hangout prior to the concert was watching one particular usher look over the entire back of the floor area for any breach attempt. He was a big goofy guy, standing in one place, shifting his weight from side to side...looking very attentive...but then we realized he was moving back and forth in exactly the same way for at least the 20 minutes we were there...he was on auto pilot...OMG...why anyone could have rushed the floor area...now that would have made the front page of the Wachovia Bank Newsletter.
Concert begins, our strategy is to stay in the back for Trapt, then make a move to the front. We hang by the sound board in the middle throughout Trapt, and they’re barely tolerable, the sound is absolutely dreadful, full blame on the Wachovia PA system (used for hockey I suppose). A dead giveaway to a good sound system is when you get to a concert and the prerecorded stuff sounds good quality and it’s like a band’s playing. But with this underpowered system with crap PA speakers, the vocals come through completely strained, and the instruments can’t be mic’d properly. No matter for Nickleback’s in your face, I’m a commercial band and love it approach, but NG for a rock concert.

Trapt ends, without being obnoxious, we made it to about 20 feet to the stage, on Pete’s side, and with Sam’s setup just to our right. Within 2 seconds of seeing the guys, all the prior BS is obliterated.
I was not expecting this show. I had a mental image of Pete formed from the videos I’ve seen, planted with foot up, determined, deliberate, rock master extraordinaire, but no Pete Townsend in terms of rockin out during the performance. Whatever’s been goin on or what led to this nite, I’m not sure, but all he transmitted loud and clear was pure sexual rock energy, aka Hendrix. He’s wackin the guitar, runnin, jumpin, but not as a result of anything planned...he is living, breathing, rockin to the music in one constant extraordinary emotional breakout. And although I’m watchin Pete most of the time, I can’t help but notice Sam bouncin, bangin, lookin like if weren’t for his set being screwed to the floor (it must be) they’d be flyin out in every direction. He’s got the energy of a Keith Moon, lookin out like him in every direction, obviously into the entire experience, not just his drum set...no it’s not about him in any way,,,it’s a complete sacrifice of mind and body.
It’s actually between the two of them that I’m stuck in a constant rush...I can’t believe rock this real, this untarnished, this pure to anything I’ve seen since the 60s can be blowin me away the way it’s doin. But I knew comin in this is what made me come to this band in the first place...aside from the Breaking Benjamins et al that I do like, these guys took me back to the 60s. This is what I’ve been waiting for...for what...20 years....holy chit!
More WHO analogies. Dean could be consider the Entwisle of the group. Yeah he’s not Joe and he’s not going to provide the added groupie appeal, but he’s as solid in this setup as anything I can imagine. He’s dam cool, and if he provides the footing from which to launch these type of performances, and more outstanding music in the future, then you can’t help but say, holy chit, that’s freekin amazing.
The new song - I’ve always thought of Chevelle as attracting me in terms of “Black Sabbath appeal”. Not necessarily anything directly related to style but the pure uncompromising impact of the music. The new song came through like that..and it had an intoxicating underlying rhythm...sort of reminded me of Point #1 in a way. I’m not sure if this is a direction they’re takin in terms of getting more back to their earlier roots. I do like the heady music combined with the all out 3 piece onslaught, but who knows, maybe a better produced “Point #1 type”...ah shut up for Christ’s sake.
Thank you Pete, Sam, and Dean.
This is the best concert I’ve ever seen.
That guy screaming in between songs....it may have sounded like a bear in pain...that was me.
